Camille’s advocacy started in a moment of real fear and grew into a province-wide movement. In early 2022, her family learned they were about to lose their family doctor just as her children (and husband) were living with an extremely rare auto-inflammatory condition that demands careful monitoring and medications that suppress the immune system.
Suddenly, “just go to a walk-in clinic” wasn’t a workable plan, it felt like a dangerous gamble with the people she loves most. Out of that stress and urgency, Currie launched a petition and founded BC Health Care Matters, creating a place where patients could share what it’s like to fall through the cracks and where decision-makers couldn’t dismiss those experiences as isolated stories.
Her work is a clear case study in moving from lived experience to systems change: identify the gap, build community around shared evidence, and keep the focus on outcomes for people who can’t afford to fall through the cracks. Doctors of BC awarded Camille with an Excellence in Health Promotion award, citing the campaign’s 50,000+ petition signatures and rallies that helped shine a light on the primary-care crisis.
