Fatima’s work started the way a lot of real change starts, she noticed something painful in front of her and refused to ignore it. Originally from Mozambique and living in the Cowichan Valley since the early 2000s, Fatima is a chef by training, but in her community she’s become a builder, an organizer, and a fierce advocate for kids. In 2016, she and a few friends realized many students were showing up to school without breakfast, and sometimes without enough food for the whole day, so she opened her café kitchen and simply started cooking.
That small, practical act grew into Nourish Cowichan, a full-scale charity kitchen that now feeds over 3,000 children and teens across 23 schools, plus daycares and community programs. In the 2023–24 school year alone, the team provided about 720,000 meals and snacks, powered by a lean staff (about 3 full-time and 1 part-time) and 70+ volunteers, board members, donors, and local partners.
By 2025, the impact expanded beyond the valley to include schools in the Pacific Rim School District. Fatima’s story is a clear case study in grassroots changemaking, turning the simple belief that no child should have to learn hungry into a community-wide system of care built on dignity, equity, and relationships.
In this series, Camille Currie, founder of BC Health Care Matters, discusses starting the grassroots movement which brought medical professionals and patients together under the banner that everyone deserves access to a family doctor. She highlights the role of social media, involving team members with various passions and gifts, and the importance of making people feel heard, recognized and valued.
